Improve Recollection With These Memory Tricks

memory lossAs age progresses, it can seem that losing memories is inevitable. Some people say that older memories are replaced with newer ones, but that isn’t much consolation to someone who can’t remember a lost love or a child’s birth. Use the techniques in this article to help you remember things better.

One exercise that will help your memory is to write things down. This exercise causes blood flow to the area of the brain that helps you remember things. Keeping journals and writing things down will really help your ability to remember important information over a period of time.

If you need to commit a set of facts to memory, study it in different locations. This stops your brain from associating the information with one place so that it can be more general when it needs to recall that information in the future.

Avoid Stress

Studies have shown that people undergoing stress and who have constant negative thoughts are more likely to suffer from memory loss. Ask your doctor to recommend some exercises you can do to relieve your stress.

Sleep greatly affects how both your short and long-term memory work. Studies have shown that regularly adequate sleep is important to keep your memory in tiptop shape. When you aren’t focused, it can be difficult to retain your memories over the long term.

Therefore, you need to make sure that you get enough sleep at night.  A tired mind has greater trouble recalling facts and file away memories. Try to get a good amount of sleep on a regular basis to allow your mind to work at its optimum level.

Another strategy that helps to increase your memory to recall information is to picture the things you want to remember and then recall them. If you are studying information from a textbook, use photographs or charts as visual stimulus for memorizing the information. You could also draw graphs or charts to aid you in this memorizing process.

Try Memory Pills

Memory loss is possibly the most tragic thing that happens to the aging mind. Prescription drugs and memory pills over the counter can help slow memory loss. It is especially helpful if memory loss is associated with severe problems like dementia.

When you have to remember lots of information, don’t overload yourself with too much information at one sitting. Instead, create study sessions for yourself. Don’t try learning everything there is to learn in one sitting.

It will almost certainly overwhelm you, and you will end up forgetting much of it very easily. You need to schedule multiple small study sessions on a regular basis to help your brain get in the habit of consistently remembering.

Even if you aren’t currently enrolled in school, you should continue to exercise your brain by learning new things. When you don’t learn anything new, you aren’t exercising the area of your brain which controls memory. When you don’t stretch your memory on a regular basis, it is going to get harder and harder to remember things.

Maintain Healthy Relationships

Another trick that works well to remember information is to repeat the information you want to remember aloud. When you learn the name of someone, repeat it aloud to commit it to your memory.

Repeating to yourself facts or information will make it easier to remember at a later date. If you happen to be by yourself or don’t really care who hears you, repeat it several times to yourself.

One way to effectively decrease the risk of developing conditions that can cause you to lose your memory loss is to have numerous healthy relationships. Research shows that spending even a few hours every week with your family members or other people who are close to you strengthens the areas of the brain responsible for memory.

Nutrients in your diet can also affect your memory. Adding fish oil to your diet can boost your cognitive abilities. Getting the right dosage is necessary, so consult you doctor prior to taking this supplement.

Use A Mnemonic Device

Another strategy to remember information better is to focus only on the topic in front of you when you are memorizing information. Information that is learned must be stored in the long-term memory for humans to be able to recall it effectively. It’s hard to do this effectively if you don’t give it your full attention.

You could also use a mnemonic device to help you retain important information. This technique requires pairing something you have to remember with something that you know very well.

Pay attention when introduced to new information and it will help your memory. If you are introduced to an individual you are unfamiliar with, mentally envision how their name is spelled, and always ask for the proper spelling if there are multiple possible spellings for the name.

You could try asking how it is spelled as an icebreaker. Make a comment or compliment about their name to further prime your memory with this and it will help you to remember it later.

You may not be able to achieve full and successful recovery of all your old memories. However, by exercising your mind on a regular basis you can, at least, hold on to all the new memories that you create. Use this advice to make and keep your memory sharp.
